The kitchen is our most tenured volunteer role here at St. Francis House. Kitchen volunteers can expect to work in a fast-paced environment with anywhere from three to nine other volunteers and up to three kitchen staff. Volunteer will serve meals, complete meal prep (cutting vegetables/meats, making sandwiches, etc.), interact with guests in the dining room as they eat, assist with dishwashing, and clean up at the end of each shift. Meals
Our refuge, recovery, employment and housing services overlap and build on one another to provide our guests with continuous and comprehensive support. Art can help guests feel empowered and realize that their identities expand far beyond their experience of homelessness. We integrate our art therapy into our recovery programming such as our workforce development programs to help job seekers explore their career paths and build life skills. We offer many activities such as working with acrylics, watercolors, sewing, crochet, making a mask, creating a visual journal or assembling a collage. Our guests have shown their work in a variety of local venues and shows, including the annual City Heart show and sale.

Gurleen, our amazing Art Therapist, embraces volunteers who display a willingness to listen, patience, kindness, take direction well, and can work independently or in pairs. Expressive Therapy volunteers may be placed with a guest as they work on their art, assist with creating art displays according to a monthly theme, stock art supplies, or complete light cleaning. Some had eight-foot setbacks like on Remsen Street, others a little more or a little less.

Called "the town two miles long and two yards wide" because it was developed atop a narrow ridge overlooking the Mississippi River, it was the commercial and cultural center of the surrounding plantation country. Below St. Francisville's bluffs, another early settlement called Bayou Sara had been established by French colonists in the early 1790s. It was at one time the largest antebellum Mississippi River port between New Orleans and Memphis, but was superseded by Natchez. The settlement was gradually destroyed by repeated flooding and fires, and nothing exists of Bayou Sara today. A few of its surviving structures were hauled up the hill into St. Francisville in the 1920s. While the canyon was noted to have some unique geologic features, notably the inactive San Francisquito fault line, Mulholland and his builders decided it was a suitable place to build a dam. St. Francis House can accommodate small groups comprised of 5-7 individuals in our kitchen on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We do not have group volunteer opportunities on the weekend at this time. Located in the heart of downtown Boston, we are the largest day shelter in Massachusetts, welcoming up to 600 individuals experiencing homelessness each day.
