mcclean design

I have been able to establish lasting relationships with high quality builders and other design professionals helping to ensure that our entire team is committed to realizing the dreams and aspirations of our clients. It is what I wanted to do as a little boy and which I am lucky enough to be able to practice today and hopefully for a very long time. We continue to strive for excellence in design and to push the boundaries of imagination in creating extraordinary spaces that we hope will provide enjoyment for many years to come. Presently, I am practicing new approaches to architecture and assisting in the design process with 3D models, drawings, and presentations. Moved over to the U.S. with my husband in my early twenties and we have lived here ever since.

Member of the American Institute of Architects and licensed architect in several states.

Materials were selected to withstand the corrosion of salt air, but there are luxurious accents, notably an onyx wall in one of the powder rooms. A glass bridge sails over a lower-level swimming pool, and leading to the great room, which runs almost the whole width of the house. Heaters and a two-sided fireplace allow the covered patio and spa at one end to be used year-round. A stainless steel, spiral staircase with limestone treads links the three levels and sparkles in the light of suspended globes.

MODERN LUXURY

I first found those intertwining fields pushing me towards a love of music, which still flourishes but evolved into a love of architecture. After SDSU, I got my master’s degree from NewSchool of Architecture with concentration in digital architecture and fabrication and became a licensed Architect shortly thereafter. As a project manager at McClean Design, I work on all aspects of the building process, from early schematic design to construction administration. There is a holistic approach to our design method where we fully embrace our client’s lifestyle and transform it into something that is both artistically timeless and simplistically functional.

The living area contains a unique bar area with an aquarium back drop and a clear glass floor to the wine cellar below. A home office next to the kitchen area enjoys a unique perspective, borrowing views across the living room and the courtyard, as well as opening to a small, landscaped patio. The remainder of the program for the upper level consists of two additional bedrooms, as well as support spaces. Since its founding in 2000, McClean Design has grown into one of the leading contemporary residential design firms in Southern California committed to excellence in modern design. We are currently working on a wide variety of projects across much of North America with additional projects overseas. We work with both homeowners and developers and our staff offers a full range of design skills ensuring that our projects are completed in a timely manner and to the highest standards.

Beverly Hills, CA

Outdoor areas readily penetrate inside spaces to create a visibly seamless threshold between exterior and interior. Marcheeta I is located on a tight lot in a very desirable tract in the hills above Sunset plaza. Our goals for this project were to make the most of the views and utilize the terrain of the lot to allow for a large basement level entertaining area as well as parking. We achieved this using a beautiful marble wall that completely screens the front of the house and creates an entry water courtyard that opens to the kitchen.

During his time at university he traveled extensively and worked for award winning architectural practices in London, Dublin and Sydney, Australia. He worked with the Monument Service of Ireland sketching and surveying many of the historic castles and monasteries dotted throughout the Irish landscape. In addition, he spent a year working with a firm in Dublin on museums and art galleries. After graduation, he arrived in Southern California and worked for various local architectural firms before establishing McClean Design in 2000.

The house is flooded with natural light through the use of large operable walls and linear skylights. We worked with Lynda Murray Interior Design to create a palette of rich warm natural tones using different stones and wood ceilings to give the home a comfortable feel. The pool on the main level of the house cascades into a water feature below which wraps around a fire pit off the main entertaining space. A unique feature of the home is the skylights within the pool that allow daylight and views of swimmers to the pool below. Balboa Peninsula runs parallel to the Pacific coast, just south of Newport Beach, enclosing a sound that is alive with pleasure boats. That makes it a picturesque location for houses that back up to the marina, but most are generic structures squeezed onto narrow lots.

During my time at university I traveled extensively and worked for award winning architectural practices in London, Dublin and Sydney, Australia. I also had an opportunity to work with the Monument Service of Ireland sketching and surveying many of the historic castles and monasteries dotted throughout the Irish landscape. In addition, I spent a year working with a firm in Dublin on museums and art galleries in the national capital. After graduation, I arrived in Southern California and worked for various local architectural firms before establishing McClean Design in 2000. He attended the Dublin Institute of Technology graduating with honors in architecture in 1994.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. My passion for high-end residential architecture inspired my relocation to Southern California. After being given the amazing opportunity to work at McClean Design, I have been fortunate enough to contribute to the design and development of some of the most luxurious custom homes in the world.

We make extensive use of glazing systems to maximize views and provide a warm light filled contemporary space. We strive for simplicity and an openness to the surrounding landscape that erodes the division between indoor and outdoor spaces; homes with an emphasis on texture and natural materials. We keep an open mind on questions of style preferring to strike a balance between the best solution for the site, our clients’ preferences, and what is potentially approvable for each particular site. The house is separated from the street by a series of stone walls with only a small break on axis with the entry bridge. Entry is though a metal gate and along a tall water wall over looking the central courtyard and leading to the glass bridge. Upon entering the living area looks directly out over the pool with the kitchen and dining family space to the left and the main bedroom wing to the right.

Since its founding in 2000, McClean Design has grown into one of the leading contemporary residential design firms, committed to excellence in modern design. After working for a few years in downtown Chicago, I made the move out to Southern California for life’s next adventure. Everything around us can be designed, and what we design is a result of what inspires us and what we want to inspire in others. I grew up in Ireland where I attended the Dublin Institute of Technology graduating with honors in architecture in 1994.

The richly finished media room opens directly to the center of the entertainment area. The remaining spaces consist of three additional bedrooms, a gym area, a service kitchen, and staff rooms. The bedrooms on the lower level all look out over a central landscaped courtyard, with a sliding glass wall that combines the outdoor garden with the family room in pleasant weather. The lower level includes a gym and wellness area in addition to the wine room with its glass ceiling to the bar area above. Since space is at such a premium parking for the property is accessed by a ramp and located below the rear garden and pool area. The sinuous walnut and limestone-clad staircase create an interesting focal point while revealing views of the backlit wine cellar on the descent to the lower level.

During these video calls, the designer helps the customer to develop a mood board, floor plan, elevations, 3D renderings, lighting plan, and a curated product list and offers home furnishing tips and material suggestions. Backyard Lighting Ideas: A Simple Guide for Outdoor Living Spaces

This is the first spot in my house that I’ve really gone nuts with indoor plants. I decorated most of the inexpensive plant pots in the photos myself with paint pens and/or spray paint. We have this big rectangular room at the front of our house. I think it may have been intended to be a formal dining room, but it’s nowhere near the kitchen, so that doesn’t really make sense for us. And contrary to what they would have had me believe in design school, I really don’t need a drafting table that tilts up- though it was nice for keeping the dog off of it. Start your project by uploading your existing floor plan in the floor plan creator app or by inputting your measurements manually. You can also choose one of our existing layouts and temples and modify them to your needs. Build walls, add doors, windows and openings, then set your dimensions. There are several different free architectural floor plan design software, including Floor Planner, RoomSketcher, and SketchUp. You can print from RoomSketcher free either online or the app by simply clicking the print option on the 2D or 3D floor plans page, choosing a format option and paper size, and then confirming. The thing is, top quality 3D rendering capabilities often come at a cost, particularly when it comes to professional software for building plans.

Atmospheric Los Angeles Cemetery Tours

At the House of Blues, he met a statuesque 40-year-old actress named Lana Clarkson. They went to Pyrenees Castle for "just one drink." Clarkson never left the house - her body was found slumped in a chair with a single gunshot wound to her mouth. Spector's driver, who made the emergency call from the castle, later testified that Spector said, "I think I've killed someone." Spector was sentenced in May 2009. Hollywood’s first cemetery was founded in 1899 on a 100-acre land located on Santa Monica Boulevard. Hollywood Forever is famous as the resting place of some of Hollywood’s famous celebrities, including Peter Lorre, who was famous for his role as serial killer Hans Beckert in the German thriller M. For a truly horrific grave visit, make sure to stop by founder of Griffith Park, Griffith J. Griffith’s grave.

One location you could be forgiven for not recognising is the laboratory of Dr Satan and the dungeon in which the Fireflies stock up with cheerleaders. It’s the basement of the old Ambassador Hotel, which stood at 3400 Wilshire Boulevard, midtown Los Angeles (seen in films as diverse as The Graduate, Oliver Stone’s The Doors, True Romance, S.W.A.T., Rocky and Se7en.). No longer a functioning diner, or gas station for that matter, the Four Aces is one of several such establishments in the area, now solely used as sets for movies, pop promos, ads and photoshoots. It’s the Four Aces Diner, at East Avenue Q, on the northwest corner of East 145th Street, about five miles east of Palmdale in the California desert. If that sounds like it’s in the centre of a bustling downtown, it’s not. The empty desert is measured out in a grid of streets and avenues, presumably for the inevitable day when the suburbs of Los Angeles sprawl out to the Nevada border.

Otis was a drifter for much of his life, traveling over the country from Wilmington, Delaware to Hurst, Texas. In the small town of Ruggsville, Texas, he met Cutter (later to be known as Captain Spaulding), and was soon living with his new friend's family, whom he had renamed "the Fireflies". This family consisted of Cutter's girlfriend, who was then called Eve Wilson, whom Driftwood nicknamed "Mama Firefly"; Eve's two sons, Rufus and Tiny; and the daughter of Captain Spaulding/Cutter Vera-Ellen, with whom Otis formed an immediate bond and nicknamed “Baby”. On two occasions, he wears his victim's skin as a costume and fights with Spaulding for control of the family. Although Otis is albino in the first film, writer/director Rob Zombie didn't think it would fit the style and realism of the sequel.

He is not without humanity, however; he shares a bond of love and loyalty with his family, particularly his adoptive sister Baby, of whom he is fiercely protective. His relationship with his "father" Captain Spaulding is more combative; in the first film, he calls Spaulding an "old bitch", while in the second film, they frequently argue. She makes her way to the main road where she encounters Captain Spaulding, who gives her a ride in his car. She passes out from exhaustion in the front seat, and Otis suddenly appears in the back seat with a knife.

It's even harder to grasp that the world has lost an enormous number of the actors who starred in the cult classic since its release. On October 30th, 1977, Otis encountered four youths who were invited into his home courtesy of Mother Firefly. The guests consisted of Bill Hudley, Mary Knowles, Denise Willis and Jerry Goldsmith. As they drove away from the Firefly home, Otis and his brothers Rufus and Tiny ambushed them in the middle of the road.

“Lionsgate made back all their money the first day,” Zombie crowed to the A.V. House of 1,000 Corpses draws heavily from the horror canon that Zombie feasted on growing up in the sleepy town of Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the years before he went off to New York City to found White Zombie and become a heavy metal god. Fans can check out 3 From Hell during a special three-night event beginning on September 16th. Tickets for the September 16th, 17th, and 18th nationwide release of 3 From Hell are available at FathomEvents.com/3FromHell.

In the season four episode "The Chair Model," Michael Scott falls in love with a model in a catalogue, only to discover she had passed away in a car accident. He and Dwight go to her resting spot, which happens to be at Mountain View. It's not the only cemetery scene shot there, though; Six Feet Under (the O.G. goth L.A. show), Desperate Housewives, and Seinfeld all shot there as well.

Look more closely, however, and you’ll find that this cemetery is the basin of L.A.’s history. The cemetery was built in 1884, far before many of the cemeteries on this list, and every name of L.A.’s mythology can be found among the gravestones. Phineas Banning, who founded the town of Wilmington and laid the foundation for the Port of Los Angeles, can be found here as well. It's worth mentioning that this space is far less busy than any of the other, more popular cemeteries, so take your time as you mingle with the dead. House of 1000 Corpses is graphic and disturbing — just look at the title. The movie's violence and sadism led to it not being able to shake an NC-17 rating, caused Universal to shelve it.

Later, in the winter of 1976, Baby returned to Ruggsville alone and resumed her life on the Firefly farm while Driftwood continued his murderous rampage. Otis traveled across the country stealing and selling cars to survive, but eventually returned to Ruggsville and resumed his relationship with Baby and the other Firefly family members. This film confirms that Driftwood is by far the most aggressive member of the Firefly family. Though he bickers with the family, he is shown to be quite loyal to them. When four young adults are at his house, due to their tire being shot by Rufus, he came down to join their Halloween Eve dinner. Although it’s unknown if he only came to disturb the wandering couples or to please Mama Firefly.

Since its release, the film has achieved a cult following, was developed into a haunted-house attraction by Zombie for Universal Studios, and was followed by two sequels, The Devil's Rejects (2005) and 3 from Hell (2019). He would not, however, have another role as popular as Chop Top until 2003, when he starred as the maniacal Otis B. Driftwood (named after Groucho Marx's character from A Night at the Opera) in Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses. He played in other Rob Zombie films such as Halloween and the Grindhouse fake trailer segment Werewolf Women of the SS.

As a result, up until the Chinese Cemetery of Los Angeles was built in 1922 by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of Los Angeles, Chinese citizens could only be buried in a potter's field owned by the County. Racism against the Chinese community didn't stop at their burial plots, though. Around the same time, Los Angeles razed the original Chinatown to make way for Union Station.

Often considering himself a revolutionary and an artist, he makes sculptures out of his victims or skins them to wear as a suit. In the film, he also tortures the four young adults physically and emotionally, even going as far to show one of the couples her boyfriend, whom he turned into a sculpture dubbed “Fish Boy”. Otis also wears the skin suit of one of his victims father, before taking her and the other two young adults, whom he dressed as rabbits, to what can be considered a place of a Satanic ritual.

An animated musical "sidequel" released in 2009, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is also part of the tale. The Fireflys brought their victims out to a nearby cemetery where they intended on using them as a sacrifice in a bizarre occult ritual. Otis applied black and white grease paint to his face in the pattern of a skull. Mary managed to escape from them, and Otis shouted after her "Run, rabbit, run!" before sending Baby Firefly off to hunt her down.

Making a Cult Classic

She, in turn, is the biological mother of Baby, Rufus, and Tiny, as well as the presumed adoptive mother of Otis, whose last name was previously Driftwood. Captain Spaulding and Mama are Baby's parents, making her the half-sister of Rufus and Tiny. They were still driving in the early morning hours when they noticed a police road block further down the road. All three of them realized that there was no way they were going to survive. Otis gunned the engine and drove full speed towards the police barricade whereupon they were shot and wounded in a hail of gunfire. Wanted by the police, they were unable to procure a room for themselves, so they barged into a room occupied by four members of a country/western band named Banjo & Sullivan.

Take Dr. Satan (Walter Phelan), hands down one of the most interesting beings in the Firefly trilogy. The cyborg scientist appears briefly in the movie, but will haunt viewers' nightmares forever, even if he doesn't necessarily fit in with the style of subsequent flicks. The Devil's Rejects and 3 from Hell have since rounded out the trilogy, so this might come as a surprise to many fans. But Zombie knew the troubles that accompany getting a movie funded, and as the filmmaker explained in a 2013 interview, "If someone's willing to put up that money and make your film happen, you really can't look that gift horse in the mouth." They continued driving until they reached Charlie's Frontier Fun Town, a brothel run by Spaulding's brother, Charlie Altamont. Charlie agreed to let them stay until things quieted down and Otis was able to avail himself of everything the place had to offer, including Charlie's prostitutes.

Initially known as the Morningside Cemetery, the San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar is one of the most enigmatic cemeteries in the area. With businesses and real estate rapidly increasing, the size of the cemetery eventually trickled down to 3.8 acres of land. It had been privately owned for most of its existence, and the last officially noted burial was in 1939. In 1959, the Native Daughters of the Golden West were handed the rights to the cemetery and since then attempted to preserve it.

Awakening with a start, Otis donned an iron mask with a skull painted on it, grabbed a rifle, and opened fire on the offending police officers. The other family members did likewise, but it soon became apparent that they were outgunned. Otis grabbed Baby and retreated into the basement, which was equipped with a secret access hatch that led into a sewar drainage tunnel.

The Mountain View Mortuary, Crematory, and Cemetery is a family-owned cemetery in Altadena that was founded in 1882. It sits a bit east of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and down the street from Devil's Gate, so the spirits of L.A.'s occultism run rampant in the area (and imbue the cemetery with an equally eerie vibe). The massive cemetery features some unparalleled views of the San Gabriel Mountains and beautiful, expansive grounds.

House of 1000 Corpses was Rob Zombie's directorial debut

Located near downtown Los Angeles, Chapel of the Pines is located a short walking distance from the Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery. The impressive column entrance and dome structure of this 1903 crematory is reminiscent of ancient Roman buildings. Although there aren’t spooky stories or ghostly haunts at this crematory, it is worth visiting for the beautiful design. Amongst the cremated here is actress Helen Chandler, famous for her role as Mina Seward in the original 1931 Dracula. She rests in a certain section of the crematory where visitors are not allowed.

Otis attacked Bill Hudley while his brothers brought the others back to the house. Otis dragged Bill down into his personal torture den where he bound him against the wall and began to dismember him. Experimenting with various props and strange devices, Otis transformed Bill into a carnival-style curiosity which he dubbed "Fish Boy". Around the year 1965, he came to the town of Ruggsville where he met Eve Wilson and Johnny Lee Johns.

By the second film, he had become far less over-the-top, but was also more depraved and sadistic, and he looks older than in the first. When Sheriff Wydell captures Otis along with Captain Spaulding and Baby the film's end, he shows them a picture of her ravaged corpse, and Otis smugly says that she was still "good" for him, and he skins the face of a man and then forces the man's wife to wear it as a mask. The only time Otis was calm or even remotely nice was to one of Charlie's prostitutes Candy and was actually shown to be upset by her death. Located a half-mile south of Castillo del Lago, Wolf's Lair (2869 Durand Dr, Los Angeles 90068) was built in 1927 by art director and real estate magnate, L. This eccentric mansion came equipped with a secret passageway to a hidden apartment for Wolf’s mistresses and a turret for his pet gibbon. Perhaps it was too much "monkeying around" that led Wolf to pitch forward dead into a bowl of minestrone in 1972.

In addition, famed murderer Louise Peete, convicted of killing three or more victims, also rests in Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery after a gas chamber execution in 1947. Its age, coupled with its lack of upkeep, makes for a straight up haunting cemetery. It's now the perfect place to snap a picture for the album cover for your Morrissey cover band. It also houses the burial site for the Japanese Americans who fought in the 442 Regimental Combat Unit during WWII. There's even a site where 400 former carnies are buried; the Pacific Coast Showmen's Association Plot was reserved for retired or out-of-work carnies. The explosion of the movie’s fanbase really hit actor Robert Allen Mukes, who played Rufus Firefly, for the first time a few years ago, when he signed an autograph for a 12-year-old girl.

For a deeper look into the spot's history, check out thishalf-hour documentary on Mountain View. Like other cult classics, House of 1,000 Corpses has also benefited from everyone being online all the time. “It’s gotten really big,” observed Cherry, a costume designer who cosplays as Baby Firefly, and once played her in a haunted house at Zombie’s annual Great American Nightmare scarefest. Luckily, the intervening years had only sharpened House of 1,000 Corpses’ flavor.

On a high-wing airplane the fuselage is underneath the wing, so the fuselage pressure differential acts on the wing lower surface. This means that the action of the fuselage increases the pressure on the bottom of the windward wing and decreases it on the bottom of the leeward wing. This increases the lift of the windward wing, decreases the lift of the leeward wing and causes the airplane to roll toward the leeward wing. This is stable dihedral effect, so the fuselage/wing interaction of a high-wing airplane adds lateral stability.

Dihedral wings are some of the most common

At the wing root, the flow over the wing and the flow over the fuselage must merge smoothly to avoid premature flow separation, which can cause early stall and increase drag. Propellers can either be forward or rear-facing, and the wing form is designed to generate a channel of low-pressure air through the tube, or channel, to help generate lift. Two notable aircraft with this design are the German Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive bomber and the F4U Corsair.

The recycling of the 4.5 million parts of this “big aluminum can” is seen as an extreme example of sustainable reuse and appropriation. American consumers and industry throw away enough aluminum in a year to rebuild our entire airplane commercial fleet every three months. The suspended wings rest over self-supporting glass walls that front the hillside house, which was designed by American architects Studio of Environmental Architecture. “We thought of the plane as Native Americans considered the buffalo, using every part of it,” Hertz says.

Fala Atelier transforms Porto warehouse into "house of many faces"

In the case of the latter, the wing design was chosen due to the very large engine and propeller the aircraft was equipped with. Technically falling under the category of polyhedral wings, this design was incorporated to reduce the tendency for the formation of wake vortices. High wing airplanes tend to be very stable at slower speeds, meaning they can right themselves quickly if they encounter turbulence while traveling slowly. Based on the assumption that the skin and web only transmits shear and no axial load, the shear stress within a skin panel will remain constant where ever the thickness of the skin is constant.

Loads acting on a Wing

The moment at which the structure will collapse is determined once the crippling stress (critical stress in spar cap) and the moment of inertia (function of extent to which skins have buckled) is known. The product of the shear stress and the thickness is therefore constant along a skin and is termed shear flow. FAR regulations stipulate that an aircraft must be able to withstand limit loads with neither any permanent deformation of the structure nor any detriment to safe operation of the aircraft.

Limit and Ultimate Loading

As the name suggests, a low wing configuration is one where the wings are mounted below the midline of the aircraft. By placing the wings in this configuration, the pilot can benefit from improved visibility, and it also frees up space in the fuselage from the wing spar carry-through needed for higher mountings. The wing will fail when the stress in the stiffeners or spar caps reach their maximum crippling (failing) stress. The problem becomes an iterative one as the stress at which the skin first starts to buckle must be determined, which in turn affects how much additional load is transferred into the spar caps. As with the shear flow analysis, the mathematics behind this calculation are complex and outside of the scope of this tutorial. Instead we briefly introduce the rationale behind a collapse moment analysis.

In researching aircrafts we began to realize that there are hundreds of airplanes that have been retired to sit in the deserts of California and are sold at the price of their principal raw material, aluminum. The idea of utilizing recycled components and appropriating them in creative new ways was certainly consistent with the existing context of the Duquette structures. Additionally, incorporating prefabricated lightweight components off site and delivering them to the remote site via helicopter, although at a cost of $8,000/hr. Became realistic after considering the cost of getting traditional labor and material to the site.

Buckling of the skin does not necessarily result in failure of the whole wing structure as the buckled skin will transfer load into the spar caps and stiffeners that border the skin. A shear flow analysis is used to size the thickness of the wing skin and shear webs. A shear force diagram is determined at the maximum load factor which then serves to specify the variation in shear force along the span of the wing.

The spar caps also form a boundary onto which wing skin is attached and support the wing skin against buckling. Concentrated load points such as engine mounts or landing gear are attached to the main spar. There is no need to make the wing any stronger than it needs to be, and any excess strength (wing weight due to extra material) will reduce the payload capacity of the aircraft making it uncompetitive or uneconomic to operate. Although, we did find out that we have to register the roof of the house with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) so pilots flying overhead do not mistake it as a downed aircraft.

The Boeing was bound for the garbage pile before S.E.A. intercepted and reimagined it as architecture. The wings and tail stabilizers were all pre-engineered as self-supporting structures, making them perfect lightweight long-span roof profiles. The project represents S.E.A.’s commitment to maximizing the longevity of building and product life-cycles in novel ways. On a low-wing airplane the situation is reversed because the fuselage-induced pressure differential acts on the wings’ upper surface, reversing the sense of the induced rolling moment.

And, in this country, it’s a long, hard battle for permits and approvals.” He usually acquires gutted planes. Before power-sawing a jet into transportable pieces, his crew blocks it up to avert tipping and fills the fuselage with carbon dioxide to prevent fire. Where production schedules are not adhered to by the CLIENT, final delivery date or dates will be adjusted accordingly.

This causes a lift differential between the wings that causes the airplane to roll. A similar problem can occur in side view if the fuselage belly pulls upwards significantly just aft of the wing. This is not an uncommon situation as designers try to minimize wetted area by pinching in the fuselage cross-section as rapidly as possible aft of the cabin to minimize the skin area of the tail cone. The wing design is not very common and is mainly seen in prototype aircraft. However, some research is being conducted for the wings’ potential in small UAVs.
